Man of Steel might be the most divisive film of the summer yet. Some call it the Superman movie they’ve been waiting a lifetime for. Others call it snoozefest. Regardless, Warner Bros. has fast tracked a sequel that Zach Snyder will once again direct. General Zod made sense as the first villain to encounter Superman, although Michael Shannon hardly knocked it out of the park. So here’s ten villains who could make the sequel far more interesting.

Who Is He? A cyborg powered by Kryptonite.

Why Him? Man of Steel smartly avoided the green rock of terror. But based on the ending, Clark may be more emotionally vulnerable than ever. So how does he deal with a foe he can’t even touch?

Who Is He? An interdimensional trickester with a knack for tormenting Superman

Why Him? Know what Man of Steel really needed? A funny bone. Mr. Mxyzptlk would hardly be the main villain, but perhaps a distraction from the real enemy. Therefore he doesn’t undercut the tension while still challenging our hero.

Who Should Play Him? Verne Troyer

Who Is He? A creepy “gimmick” villain who hears voices from “Mother”. Seems like he might have a place in Arkham Asylum.

Why Him? A simple, Earhtly villain that could put Superman back in humanity’s good graces after the Man of Steel ending. Like Mxyzptlk, he would more likely be a side villain as opposed to the true threat.

Who Is He? A clone of Superman with a reversal on many of his powers, and personality.

Why Him? One origin of the character has him created by General Zod, which could be a worthy connection to the first film.

Who Should Play Him? Henry Cavill, because he’s a clone. Or maybe Brandon Routh…

Who Is She? In an accident that the media blames on Superman, she gains electrical powers.

Why Her? Her origin could play up the guilt from the end of Man of Steel. She’s also one of his more charismatic rogues and could lend some much needed energy (or electricity?) to the sequel.

Who Should Play Her? Jennifer Lawrence

Who Is He? Classic comic book accident gives this guy the ability to absorb energy temporarily by touch.

Why Him? He’s a strong threat to both Superman and any populace he decides to wreak havoc on. Like Metallo, he could render Superman relatively powerless.

Who Should Play Him? Bryan Cranston

Who Is He? A prehistoric being from Krypton with unheard of strength also responsible for the death of Superman.

Why Him? See above. The DEATH of Superman. It’s a classic story, one that would make a glorious and epic transition to the big screen.

Who Should Play Him? The best damn CGI money can buy.

Who Is He? An android that stole the capital city of Krypton back in the day.

Why Him? Brainiac is a villain based around technology. In today’s world, there are limitless creative options for making Brainiac an updated supervillain of this era. Technology also isn’t something Superman can just defeat with his fists.

Who Should Play Him? HAL 9000, or Paul Bettany

Who Is He? Ruler of the planet Apokolips and basically the big bad of the whole DC Universe.

Why Him? Maybe better for a third Superman movie in this series or the eventual Justice League film, Darkseid is a no-brainer. But he could be introduced in the next film, only to launch a full-scale invasion of Earth in whatever future Warner Bros. sees for Kal-El.

Who Should Play Him? Look no further than his voice actor in the DC Animated Universe, Michael Ironside

Who Is He? Are you living under a rock? He’s Superman’s human arch-nemesis! The Joker to his Batman!

Why Him? Lex Luthor is one of the most easily adaptable supervillains ever created. He fits in every incarnation of Superman. He’s as necessary to the character as Lois Lane. The list goes on…

Who Should Play Him? Billy Zane
