The twisty missing persons mystery based on Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel appears to be right at home in Fincher’s wheelhouse.

If you’re one of the few people who didn’t devour the pages of Flynn’s Gone Girl last year, you better add it to your summer reading list. The tale of Nick and Amy Dunne’s (Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike respectively) fatalistic marriage is hitting theaters this fall.

In the novel, Nick discovers his wife to be missing on their 5th wedding anniversary. What follows is an intense crime search and media firestorm, both of which examine the complexities of the modern marriage, and push Nick to his limits.

The first trailer for the film doesn’t give much away, but the nonlinear series of clips suggest that the tone and style of the book–which alternates perspectives between Nick and Amy every chapter–will still be very much intact.

Fans will likely be pleased with Fincher taking the helm. His previous body of work fits right into the murky world of the story. What may surprise them, however, is that Flynn, who also wrote the screenplay for the film, recently told Entertainment Weekly that the book’s ending has been drastically changed for the screen. While this may upset some readers, others will likely be even more excited given how polarizing the original ending was.

Gone Girl opens in theaters October 3rd. Check out the trailer below!
