‘Falling Skies: Grace’ Review

This week brought yet another episode of Falling Skies that was just barely good enough for me to watch again next week. Grace had a lot of things going on at once. Tom led a team of Hal, Pope, and others to get a few motorcycles to prepare for the mission to rescue his son and the other harnessed children. Anne tried to communicate with the skitter that was captured last episode. Matt was given a job working radios with Uncle Scott. None of these storylines were particularly exciting but switching between them gave the episode better pacing than the show has had in the past.

We learned a lot about the aliens this episode. The harnesses on the childrens’ backs are controlled by what appears to be the skitters’ minds. The episode also did its best to humanize the skitters without giving them a motivation. This was the most successful part of Grace.

However this success led to another problem: I care about the captive skitter more than most of the human characters. Sure, Tom, Hal, and Matt have all managed to tug on the heartstrings a little but most of the rest of the cast continues to bore. Neither Moon Bloodgood nor Will Patton bring life to their characters.

Luckily we got a lot of Pope this episode as he remains to be my favorite character. There were also a few pretty decent stunts towards the end of the episode with the motorcycles, but it did not save the episode from mediocrity.

Unfortunately Falling Skies continues to skate by as it barely keeps me invested week by week. Next week is apparently the rescue mission for Tom’s harnessed son which sounds exciting in theory but we will just have to wait and see. (6/10)
