Iron Man and Superman got a head start on superhero marketing for summer 2013, but Wolverine just tossed a very big, awesome hat in the ring at the last minute.

Due to the failure of X-men Origins: Wolverine, many have been skeptical about another standalone movie for the character. But the first trailer for The Wolverine surprisingly seems much more focused on the character and the story than the set pieces, although those are still there in full.

Taking place after X-men: The Last Stand, Wolverine is mourning the loss of Jean Grey but gets called to Japan where a man he saved years ago has a proposition for the immortal mutant; death.

The Wolverine looks like a Japanese superhero neo-noir. I know, try and say that three times fast. But that genre blending could turn into summer movie gold.

James Mangold (3:10 to YumaWalk the Line) directs and Hugh Jackman returns for the sixth time (yes, his hilarious cameo in X-men: First Class absolutely counts) as Wolverine.

I’ll be honest, of the superhero movies coming out this summer, this wasn’t the one I was expecting the most out of. Now good ‘ol Logan is right up there with Mr. Stark and Mr. Kent for 2013’s ultimate superhero.

The Wolverine hits theaters July 26. Check out both the domestic and international trailers below!
