“I forgive you.”

And so the game of cat and mouse continues between Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter. Where last week’s episode felt like a prologue to the season by giving us an artful yet detached look at the new life Hannibal has created for himself and Bedilia, “Primavera” answered at least two big questions from last year’s massive massacre at Hannibal’s table.

Opening with a flashback that lasted a little longer than it needed to (honestly, opening the episode on a shot of Will and Abigail dying on the floor would have been establishing enough), “Primavera” quickly established that Will Graham is in fact alive and well, while Abigail is not. We get an eight month time jump, and Will is already in hot pursuit of his former psychiatrist.

The time jump was a smart move, allowing us to catch up with Will once he was fully recovered. We join him in Italy, as he comes shockingly close to finding Hannibal. Bryan Fuller and co. make this almost-meeting feel so unimportant. When Will says “I forgive you” at the very end of the episode, we wonder what exactly Will would do with Hannibal if he caught him. Would be bring him to the authorities? Would he kill him himself? Would he even acknowledge it?

“Primavera” strongly reintroduced us to the Will/Hannibal dynamic with the two not even sharing a scene together. But this was still a tense hour that helped establish a new status quo for the series without answering too much (Jack? Alana?). Luckily, there’s still plenty of time to go for the season. Grade: B+
