Despite prior statements and other rumors, it appears that Star Trek helmer J.J. Abrams will take on Disney’s Star Wars Episode VII.

The Wrap broke the news that Abrams would direct the seventh episode in George Lucas’ beloved saga.

Abrams gained a special place in fanboys’ hearts when he revived the Star Trek franchise back in 2009 with a whole new cast playing classic characters created back in the 1960s. This summer sees the release of the sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, which Abrams also directed.

Disney bought Lucasfilm and announced the next set of Star Wars films back in October. George Lucas will serve as “creative consultant”, with Kathleen Kennedy, current Lucasfilm Chief, taking over duties.

Michael Arndt (Little Miss SunshineToy Story 3) is set to write the script.

As of now, speculation as of whether stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fischer, and Harrison Ford is ongoing, but in separate statements they all seemed interested.

This is the first big news to come out of the Star Wars camp in a while. But Abrams being at the helm will likely ease at least some fans.

Star Wars Episode VII is scheduled for release in 2015.
