Multiple sources are reporting that James Spader will leave The Office at the end of this season. No word yet on a potential replacement.

James Spader came on as Sabre CEO Robert California to help transition the show to a new era after losing their lead, Steve Carell. California will be written off by the end of season eight.

Coming just a few weeks after the news that Dwight would be getting his own spinoff and leaving The Office, what does this mean for the upcoming season nine? Well, the show has yet to be officially renewed, but despite its significant drop in quality, The Office is still one of NBC’s best rated shows.

But with two more major characters leaving, will it even be the same show come next September? It might be smart to make season nine their last; write Dwight off half way through the season, as planned, then spend the remainder of the series wrapping up the story for all the great characters left in Scranton. Then again, it doesn’t seem that NBC or the creators are ready to part with the show, as it was never a question for them that the show would continue once Michael Scott rode off into the sunset with Holly. Oh well.
