‘Lion King 3D’ Review: A Nearly Flawless Transfer of a Disney Classic

We all know how great the movie is. No other Disney movie achieves the epic feel or beautiful nature of the animation that The Lion King does. The characters are iconic and everyone has the words of “Hakuna Matata” memorized. This review will not focus on the film itself but the 3D transfer. It’s a classic and worthy of a perfect four star score, and we all know it.

3D continues to sweep Hollywood as a tour de force of poor transfers that hinder the movie going experience. When Lion King was first announced to be coming back to theaters with a 3D coating I couldn’t help but be skeptical. Luckily the 3D transfer is fantastic.

The most impressive aspect of it is how a 2D animated movie can look this incredible and up to par with the 3D animated movies of the Pixar age. Close up shots of the characters look incredible and bring a very real depth to the lions and other animals.

A lot of other parts of the film look fantastic too. The wildebeest stampede is a standout sequence. All of the “action” sequences are well transferred and look as if you could walk straight into them. The musical numbers all look great too, particularly “I Just Can’t Wait to be King”.

However, I must admit that scenes that had characters in the background to have scenery in the foreground did not look nearly as good. Those are the shots that I was reminded that the movie is animated in only 2D. But they are always quickly replaced with something that looks amazing.

Whether you are seeing Lion King again for nostalgia purposes or the 3D, you won’t be disappointed. The transfer is beautiful and possibly the best 3D I have seen since Avatar, and I am no fan of 3D. This is something you don’t want to miss. (***1/2 out of 4)
