As Louie heads into the end of its season, we are treated to the first part of a very interesting “what if” scenario.

The first part of this three part story felt only like set up. While that isn’t a bad thing the episode really didn’t so much aside from bring interesting ideas to the table that will likely be covered in the next two episodes.

Late Show Part 1 sees Louie with the career opportunity of a lifetime after being a hit on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. The scenes in the beginning where he makes fun of Tom Cruise and Jay Leno actually shows up were pretty great. Louie naturally pulled these scenes off with just the right amount of realism.

Then came a call from CBS. Garry Marshall showed up as the president of CBS to offer Louie David Letterman’s job, as in this fictional universe he is retiring. The whole meeting sequence was fantastic as Louie questioned whether he wanted the position or not. But the episode ended abruptly, and without an episode next week, I really don’t want to wait two weeks to see what happens.

But this still opens a lot of interesting questions. Will Louie at least decide to go through with the trial? Will we get to see Jerry Seinfeld? Hopefully. I’m excited for what will happen next, even though this episode doesn’t have me ecstatic. Grade: B+
