‘Modern Family: Baby on Board’ (Season Finale) Review

The third season of Modern Family ended with what was easily one of the best episodes of the season.

With revelations and some true sadness, Baby on Board was something rare we get from this show, plot progression. A lot of changes seem to be taking place. Hopefully these will make the writers a bit more excited than they seemed to be this year.

The biggest plot this week saw Mitch and Cam finally getting a call for adopting another baby. They had to bring Gloria with them because the family spoke Spanish. Everything that ensued in this story was fantastic. From the Spanish soap opera that was happening before their eyes to Gloria’s reveal this was one of the best stories this show has done in a while. But the best came from the surprisingly poignant moment shared between Mitch and Cam after they didn’t get the baby. It was some of the finest acting we have seen yet on the show and an uplifting end to their struggle, even if it isn’t exactly what they wanted.

Meanwhile, Haley has a big announcement for her parents, she is moving in with Dylan. Naturally, this didn’t sit well with Claire and Phil. Having Dylan back was one of the best things about this episode, both the character himself and his dynamics with all of the Dunphys. But Luke had a surprise of his own (his stash of hidden mail was hysterical) and Haley is actually going to college in the fall. I cannot wait to see how the show handles this, especially with Dylan back in the picture.

The only other plot this week involved Manny and Jay having to take Lily to her dance recital. Lily, who has been underutilized all season, had some great moments here. Her and Jay’s conversation about her future brother was wonderful.

Baby on Board was easily one of the best episodes of the season and a great way to leave us off until the fall. It was funny and touching without being sappy, which is a perfect formula for any episode of this great show. (9.5/10)

Agreed, this was an absolutely brilliant episode. It really was hilarious, but managed to be emotional as well. One of the only things I had a problem with the show was the lack of actual progression with the “story” and all that, but this episode did actually give people EVEN more reasons to watch the next season. They aren’t trapped in time or anything, there is some progression that I believe will make season 4 even better.

I have a feeling that by the time Season 4 arrives, Luke and/or Manny’s voice will have dropped; that will be interesting as they are getting over.

I truly love Modern Family; it’s a brilliant sitcom. My favourite show since Arrested Development.
