Modern Family: Fulgencio Season 4 Episode 13 Review

After one of my favorite episodes of the show’s four season run, Modern Family settled back into its disappointing old self that only this season has been able to deliver.

With three major plots this week all fighting to be front and center, Fulgencio was a crowded entry. Phil tried to fix the problems of all three of his kids. Cam and Mitch are noticing a trend in Lily’s rudeness and make sacrifices to control it. Gloria’s family is in town to celebrate the birth of her and Jay’s new child.

The first two were tired attempts to give the characters something to do. But Gloria’s family actually worked quite well, showing where she had come from and what she had been left behind.

Other than that there really isn’t much to say about the first two thirds of this episode. It was old humor and old character tropes, much like the first half of the episodes of the season before the new year.

At least the culmination of everything at the christening was pretty great. Jay noticing the underwear on Mitch’s bum was fun, asking if it was a gay rebellion. Mitch and Cam noticing that Claire was the one giving Lily the foul mouth made sense as well. But nothing compared to Phil and Luke’s Godfather style plan that saved this episode from being totally boring.

And, Jay and Gloria’s son is named Fulgencio. There’s potential for some great stuff down the road with that.

Still though, this was a weaker episode of Modern Family, one that will likely be forgotten by the end of the season. Grade: B-
