Awards season continued tonight with one of the more prestigious ceremonies, the Screen Actors Guild. There were a few surprise winners tonight, as the awards shifted to the acting side of filmmaking. What do the winners mean for the upcoming Academy Awards?

The big award of the night, Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, went to The Help. As the SAG’s Best Picture of sorts, this does slightly raise its hopes come Oscar night. Realistically, Bridesmaids and Midnight in Paris had no chance of winning, but The Descendants and The Artist, which both saw love at the Golden Globes, got snubbed tonight. Does The Help deserve its win? Yes, because the performances are absolutely fantastic, but one could say the same of either The Artist or The Descendants.

In the leading actor categories we saw wins from Viola Davis for The Help and Jean Dujardin for The Artist. I liked these wins as both of them gave amazing performances. I agree with the SAG that Davis was better than Meryl Streep. However, Dujardin is not necessarily better in his film than Brad Pitt, who gave one of my favorite performances of the year. Davis now has a leg up on her friend after Streep previously took home the Golden Globe. It also throws Dujardin in as a possible dark horse to beat George Clooney.

The supporting actor categories are easy to see at this point. Christopher Plummer and Octavia Spencer both won the SAG for their roles in Beginners and The Help, respectively. They both got Globe love too. These two will win the Oscars in their categories, there is truly no doubt about that.

The only other film category was Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture, which rightfully went to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. This win could give it a better chance at beating out some other films in the technical awards at the Oscars.

With the SAGs now over, we inch ever closer to the big night. Predictions will be coming soon as well on any other updates as the season progresses.
