South Park: “Black Friday” Season 17 Episode 7 Review

Another video game console war is upon us, which means South Park is here to comment.

The PS4 and the Xbox One release dates are almost here and the fourth graders in South Park are ready to play a game, the Game of Thrones that is. As the divisions formed inbetween the two groups, tensions rose.

Cartman was the champion of the Xbox One while Stan finds himself fighting for the PS4. The commentary on gaming culture was both relevant and fun, even if we have seen it on South Park before.

The Game of Thrones references, however, felt way more like a retread to the classic Lord of the Rings episode from nearly a decade ago. It barely seemed like the writers knew anything about Game of Thrones more than what the headlines say about it. There’s a lot of violence. There’s a lot of sex. It’s a fantasy.

But to be a true parody you must go deeper than that, something this episode completely failed to do.

Granted, the episode ended on a cliffhanger of sorts. The PS4 hits shelves tomorrow and the Xbox One a week later. Could this be a return of the South Park multiple-episode epics we came to love several years ago? One can only hope. If that’s the case, this is a fine start, but hopefully the writers will watch at least one episode of Thrones before making next week’s episode. Grade: B-
