South Park ended its 17th season on a whimper as Kanye West returns to claim his wife, Kim Kardashian, is not a hobbit.

When Wendy tries to boost the self-esteem of the “ugly girl” on the cheerleading squad, it turns into a school-wide scandal involving PhotoShop and Kim Kardashian.

The ugly girl in question has a crush on Butters. But he prefers women who take care of themselves, which to him means Kim Kardashian. Wendy is infuriated and calls him out on being bigoted ignorant to the fact that many celebrities’ pictures are altered. This is where she compares Kim to a hobbit, which seemed like a gimmick just to get a lot more people on Twitter interested in what South Park was about tonight.

I’m sure it worked just fine for them, but for the fans, this episode was all over the place.

The Kanye West bits were overdone, although I’ll admit that having Pope Francis correct him on a nerdier detail from J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel was pretty satisfying. The “lesson” Wendy learns is a strange one that basically comes down to this: conform and don’t be yourself.

South Park may be inappropriate but they are usually at least on a moral high ground. I’m sure that was the point of the episode, to flip that on its head, but for what? Shock value? Creatively and artistically, it came off incredibly shallow and weak. But the episode still had a few funny bits, so I guess it wasn’t a total loss. Grade: C-

You know you totally missed the point at the end of the episode right? Sigh
