In a huge development for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony Pictures announced a collaboration with Marvel Studios for the character of Spider-Man to be integrated into the Avengers canon. That’s right true believers, Marvel’s flagship hero is coming home!

Comic book fans aren’t quiet and the gavel came down hard on last summer’s critically panned The Amazing Spider-Man 2. This spawned negotiations between Sony and Marvel over the future of the character. Now it’s official, Spider-Man will join the cinematic universe shared by Iron Man, the Hulk, and Captain America while still remaining partially with Sony.

The character, confirmed to be Peter Parker, not Miles Morales, will first appear in an upcoming MCU film, which will then be followed by a solo-film due out July 28, 2017. Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Sony’s Amy Pascal will together oversee the new Spider-Man movie.

For fans of Andrew Garfield’s take on Peter Parker, it’s not the best news, as the actor will reportedly be recast for the upcoming reboot (just please, no more origin stories).

Meanwhile, four of Marvel Studios’ films have been pushed back to make room for good ol’ Web-Head. Thor: Ragnarok will now come out November 3, 2017, with Black Panther moved to July 6, 2018, Captain Marvel pushed to November 2, 2018, and Inhumans heading to July 12, 2019.

Now, it’s time for some speculation. Since Spidey will appear before his 2017 movie, and there are five Marvel studios films coming out before then, let’s look at which film it is most likely he will appear.

Considering Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man are in post-production, they’re both pretty unlikely. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is pretty safe to bet against. That leaves Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange. In the Civil War comic book storyline, Peter Parker plays a pivotal role in the political tension between Iron Man and Captain America. That film is the most likely for the character’s debut in the universe.

But I’m sure more news will come out in the coming days/weeks/months/years. Exciting nonetheless!
