“I will finish what you started.”

Man, I don’t even know how to start this post. This is a two and a half minute trailer for a movie I haven’t seen and it’s giving me more emotions than just about any other movie this year (well, except Inside Out). There’s a lot in the third trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and I’m going to unpack it the best I can while keeping my computer as far away from the flowing tears as possible. Here’s the trailer:

There’s been some questioning of who exactly the lead is of this film. With the poster that premiered yesterday (pictured above) and the opening few shots of this trailer, Daisy Ridley’s Rey seems to have beat out the rest of the cast. We see her solemnly scavenging on Jaaku. She tells another voice, my best guess is Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata, a pirate, that she’s no one. I doubt that’s true, though the slight British accent that seems to be there is throwing me from my initial theory that she’s Han and Leia’s daughter. Still, her refusal to answer already makes her more interesting than any character in The Phantom Menace. Next up is John Boyega’s Finn, a Stormtrooper deserter that “was raised to do one thing,” but has “nothing to fight for.” We see him doing some very different fighting later in the trailer, so what might give him something to fight for?

After that, the quiet score swells in intensity, and we hear Adam Driver speak as the Sith fanboy Kylo Ren. He looks at Darth Vader’s half-melted mask and says, “I will finish what you started.”  Based on what Han says later in the trailer, it sounds like Force-users have become all but extinct. Is Kylo Ren going around the galaxy performing his own version of Order 66? We see him torturing Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron. What does he know that Kylo Ren would want?

Now it’s time for the action to kick in. The Millenium Falcon is seen dog fighting with TIE fighters as we’ve seen in previous trailers. We then hear Han tell Rey that everything she’s heard is true. “The Dark Side. A Jedi,” he says. This makes everything that happened after the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi that much more of a mystery. The same goes for the biggest question going into Episode 7: where in this galaxy far, far away is Luke Skywalker? Is his victory over the Emperor a myth?

At this point, I’m just going to list off all the questions I have. Who is Kylo Ren standing with in the rain? What’s the temple type thing we see Han, Rey, and Finn walking into? How do Han, Chewie, and Finn end up captured? Who is the Force calling to that has to let it in?

And now, for some notes of things that made me so freaking giddy that I couldn’t sit still for an hour after this trailer premiered. The dogfights between the X-Wings and TIE fighters just look so so SO awesome. Han holding a distressed-looking Leia has me both incredibly worried and beyond enamored that they’re still in love. Finally, a maskless Kylo Ren ignites his lightsaber to duel Finn, who might be holding Anakin/Luke’s first lightsaber.

So here we are. Two months away with probably all we’re going to get before release. The seventh movie of the saga looks to make due on the promise of being both progressive fun and nostalgia-gasm inducing. December 18th isn’t that far away folks. Tickets are on sale now. Get them so you don’t get sold out on opening night. Until then, may the Force be with you.
