This December brings an awards blockbuster with another adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Too bad it is directed by Baz Luhrmann.

Nothing about Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, or Australia really screamed “please let this guy direct The Great Gatsby!”. But it is what we got and the direction that the trailer takes is pretty concerning for fans of the novel.

The style in this clip blatantly looks hokey and ridiculous (all topped by the fact that this is a 3D film). It seems to be trying to be too epic. The Great Gatsby is one of the most adored novels in our history, but it is far from an epic. It is one of the most personal stories of its time, and this movie looks far from personal.

This story is all about its characters, who we barely see in the clip. The performances seem to be the only thing that can save this one. But we will just have to wait and see (in other news, Warner Bros. plans to adapt Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises with smell-o-vision!). The Great Gatsby hits theaters Christmas Day 2012. Check out the trailer below.
