Rumors that have been circulating since Comic Con have been confirmed, The Hobbit will have a third movie as opposed to the previously conceived two.

The news comes from Peter Jackson’s official Facebook page where he posted that “on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.”

Is this Warner Bros. reaching for another trilogy just as Christopher Nolan finishes up his mega-blockbuster trilogy? Will these films be able to recapture the magic of the original trilogy or will they prove to be a Phantom Menace to Middle Earth?

We will find all of this out when The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters at the end of the year. The returning cast from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy includes Elijah Wood, Ian Holm, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving, Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, and Christopher Lee. Martin Freeman will star as the younger Bilbo Baggins. The film will finally grace cinemas December 14th, 2012.
