The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Trailer Shows the Return of Orlando Bloom

As 2013 ticks along, we inch ever closer to the next installment of The Hobbit trilogy.

The second entry, titled The Desolation of Smaug (quite the mouthful isn’t it?), got its first trailer today, and it featured a familiar face.

Yes fans, Orlando Bloom is back as Legolas the elf after his career making turn as the character in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. And he has a new friend.

The trailer also showcases Evangeline Lilly, from Lost stardom, as Peter Jackson’s own creation Tauriel. Makes sense as The Hobbit is pretty much an entirely masculine affair.

Fans of the novel will of course recognize Mirkwood, the barrel scene, Lake Town, and of course Smaug himself.

The first Hobbit film, An Unexpected Journey, was met with a lukewarm critical reception (a disappointment to most fans after all three Lord of the Rings films got Best Picture nominations, the third winning). Fans adored the faithful adaptation while critics felt the film was way too long.

This first trailer appears to be in the same tone as the first film, while progressing the story into darker territory. If Peter Jackson cuts down the run time, he might be able to please everyone again.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters December 13. Take a look at the trailer below!
