As the season starts to wind down, things are getting very interesting on The Mindy Project.

Mindy finally seems to have found herself in a healthy relationship with Casey the minister. So healthy, in fact, that when Josh, her cheating ex, calls her and asks to meet up during her Santa Fe work trip, Casey encourages her to go and get closure.

The background plot this week was pretty perfect, with just the right amount of emphasis put on Jeremy and Morgan’s relationship, which was tested when Jeremy treated Morgan condescendingly in front of a colleague at the conference. They make up, and end up spending too much time together in a sweat lodge. The presentation Jeremy had to give with Morgan’s assistance was a disaster, but was very entertaining, especially for Mindy and Danny.

Mindy and Danny. All season we’ve gotten the most subtle hints that there might be something more to their relationship, and we got a little more of a taste of that this week. Danny refuses to let Mindy drive their rental car to see Josh, so he escorts her. As it turns out, Josh is in rehab for cocaine. Mindy seems like she is ready to forgive him, when he confesses all the horrible things he did to her while they were dating, and then she is livid. She tells him that her new boyfriend was the reason she showed up to see him, and Josh asks if she’s dating Danny, telling her he always sensed there were feelings there. Then on the plane ride home, they hit turbulence. Mindy and Danny instinctively hold hands, and neither looks particularly comfortable with it once they realize.

Just when it seems that we might get a little bit more of Mindy and Danny, his ex-wife, the elusive Christina played by Chloe Sevigny, shows up in the last second of the episode.

Aside from being one of the best structured episodes with one of the strongest plots and the most meaningful character development, this episode was also chock full of laughs. Small moments like Morgan interrupting a makeout session between Mindy and Casey, Mindy struggling with her oversized carryon bag, and her ridiculous purchases at a gas station were all hilarious and scattered perfectly throughout the episode. In the end, every aspect of this episode was the best of what this show has delivered, and this is the most suspenseful ending so far, leaving me so excited for the next episode and the rest of the season.
