Peter Jackson’s prequel trilogy to The Lord of the Rings will follow suit, moving the third film, There and Back Again, to a December release date rather than July.

Back in the early 2000s, Fellowship of the RingThe Two Towers and Return of the King came out a year apart ever December from 2001-2003.

Originally, The Hobbit trilogy’s capper was scheduled to be released in July, just over half a year later than the upcoming second entry, The Desolation of Smaug.

The question is did Warner Bros. want to keep up with tradition, or avoid the competition?

There and Back Again was going to come out July 18, 2014, the same day as 20th Century Fox’s X-men: Days of Future Past. Since the two franchises have a similar fanbase, the studio likely made this strategic move since the X-men prequel-sequel-hybrid is already garnering a lot of hype.

It probably didn’t help that An Unexpected Journey received lukewarm reviews, unlike the gushing Oscar talk that surrounded all three parts of the original trilogy.

Now, The Hobbit: There and Back Again hits theaters December 17, 2014.

Before that, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will arrive December 13, 2013.

And, even sooner than that, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be available on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download on March 19.
