Top 10 Female Badasses of Film

Today Sony Pictures released the first trailer for Resident Evil: Retribution, which again stars Milla Jovovich as zombie-killer Alice. Also, this week we are getting the fourth installment of the Underworld franchise starring Kate Beckinsale who has had more than enough experience killing vampires and werewolves. Between these two events, now is the perfect time to look at some other female powerhouses who will do whatever it takes to get what they want.

Some may not consider Hermione a badass, but I beg to differ. She is the one who punches Draco Malfoy in the face. She is the one who comes up with the plan to get rid of Umbridge. She is the one that Harry and Ron rely on while they are stranded in the woods. Hermione is not a girl to mess with. Harry and Ron would be nothing without her.

With four movies behind her and a fifth on the way, Alice has yet to completely destroy the Umbrella Company. However, with each entry she keeps finding more unique ways to drop their numbers. She proves how lethal a motorcycle could be in Apocolypse. In Extinction she put her telekinetic powers to great use. Lastly, in Afterlife she had an army of clones. Zombies shudder at the name of Alice.

Photo Credit: Princess Leia- Star Wars

Don’t let the name deceive you, this princess never has her blaster set to stun. The plot of the original Star Wars sees Luke and Han going to rescue her from the Death Star. In most movies before this, the damsel in distress doesn’t pick up a gun and start shooting the bad guys along with the heroes. No, Princess Leia is not a damsel in distress, she’s a warrior for the Rebellion, and the Empire knows it.

Photo Credit: The Bride- Kill Bill

Also known as Beatrix Kiddo, this samurai sword wielding vixen defeated the Crazy 88 with a grace that made it look easy. Of course “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”, and she was scorned alright. The Bride has a list of people she has to kill to get revenge over the death of her fiance and unborn baby, and she doesn’t let anyone stand between her and achieving her goal, not even Bill himself.

Who could forget this seemingly sweet girl who puts on her costume and transforms into this cursing, blood splattering superhero. Hit-Girl is positively shocking. There is not telling what incredibly violent stunt she will pull off next. Far from a role-model, this hero will leave you cheering for more long after the credits roll.

Superman has Lois Lane. Spider-man has Mary Jane. Batman has…Catwoman? Who would have thought that a superheroes one true love could be a supervillain? Catwoman oozes sexuality as she cracks her whip at anyone daring enough to approach her. Michelle Pfeiffer is perfect as the cat burglar and I doubt that Anne Hathaway can top her in this summer’s The Dark Knight Rises.

Photo Credit: Trinity- The Matrix series-

From the opening scene of the original Matrix, we knew Trinity was one tough cookie. Slow motion kicks aside, she also excels in driving a motorcycle into oncoming traffic and cool catch phrases such as “Dodge this”. Trinity is a force to be reckoned with and one that the machines should have been much more careful with.

3. Sarah Connor- Terminator series-

Speaking of machine killers, the mother of the world’s savior will have those pesky terminators rattling in their liquid metal boots. James Cameron and Linda Hamilton bring Sarah Connor to life in all of her glory. She goes head to head with with two terminators and lives to tell the tale. So what did kill her? Leukemia, but we can just forget Terminator 3 can’t we?

Photo Credit: Lisbeth Salander- The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

The most recent female badass is also one of the best. Whether its Noomi Rapace or Rooney Mara under the tattoos and piercings, Lisbeth Salander is a dangerous girl to cross. Just ask her rapist pig go a guardian. But Lisbeth Salander is secretly tender under all the toughness she gives off for everyone to see. That is what makes her so compelling.

Photo Credit: Ellen Ripley- Alien series-

Could it have been anyone else? Ellen Ripley is the queen of badassery. In Ridley Scott’s original classic, she battles one alien, but in James Cameron’s sequel she battles dozens of them and their queen. Ellen Ripley is not only the best female hero of all time, but she is also one of the best heroes overall, regardless of gender.

So do you agree with my picks for the most badass women in all of cinema? Are you going to see Underworld: Awakening this weekend? Sound off in the comments’ section!
