Star Trek Into Darkness crashes into theaters later this week and we couldn’t be more excited. The 2009 reboot made it cool to be a Trekkie again. It helps that it opened with a wicked cool space battle. But where does it rank among the best? Among the classics from a certain other franchise J.J. Abrams will be tackling next? Here are the five best space battles ever filmed. A list that will likely be undone Wednesday night.

Where better to start than the first ever space battle? The climax of the original Star Wars sees dog fights over the Death Star and its eventual destruction. The special effects don’t hold up as well as the other films in the trilogy, but as far as a built action sequence they barely come better than this.

This is how you open a movie. As a classic character is born among a tragic space battle, his father (who you might now recognize as Chris Hemsworth, aka Thor) becomes a hero the Starfleet would not soon forget. This is definitely the saddest battle on the list, but not without blazing special effects.

Malcolm Reynolds, the baddest scoundrel this side of Han Solo, has quite a surprise for the Alliance. Attaching a gun to his ship, he attacks the Reavers, an army of zombie, pirate things. They attack back, but then he jumps right into Alliance space, distracting their villainous leader from him. This chaotic epic battle is a highlight of the film.

Say what you will about the prequels, but the opening to the trilogy closer is nothing short of awesome. Anakin and Obi Wan drop in on a massive battle over Coruscant. Despite Hayden Christensen’s acting capabilities, the banter between former master and apprentice is a ton of fun, especially when R2-D2 gets involved.

It wasn’t much of a contest. The epic final battle to the original Star Wars trilogy is one of the most timeless special effects sequences of all time. Lando pilots the Millenium Falcon as the Rebel fleet collides with the Empire, and the second “fully operational” Death Star, for the final time. Love ’em or hate ’em, the Ewok celebration is well deserved for the Rebellion.
