What is ‘Bellflower’?

Last weekend Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Change-Up weren’t the only things to come to theaters. Buzz is slowly being generated around a small movie called Bellflower, which saw a limited release last Friday. Reviews are positive and the trailer is mesmerizing (see it below). It looks like one of the most interesting films of 2011. Yet I had not heard of it until today. I was scrolling my Twitter feed and found a link from Rainn Wilson to a trailer that he said “looks awesome”. Who wouldn’t trust Dwight Schrute on whether a movie looks awesome or not? Luckily I did.

Bellflower premiered at Sundance last January. Critical reaction has been very positive with critics especially noting the visual style, which you can tell from the trailer is gorgeous. Apparently Joel Hodge, the film’s cinematographer, built a one-of-a-kind camera out of vintage parts to shoot the film.

The film is written, directed, and stars Evan Glodell. Never heard of him? Yeah, me neither. Bellflower‘s IMDB plot summary reads, “Two friends spend all their free time building flame-throwers and weapons of mass destruction in hopes that a global apocalypse will occur and clear the runway for their imaginary gang ‘Mother Medusa’.” It sounds goofy but just watch the trailer. It looks to have a similar tone to Fight Club, which is a tone too few films try to explore.

Bellflower is currently playing in select cities. So if you live around New York City or Los Angeles maybe skip out on Final Destination 5 and go see this instead. Afterall, even if this film is bad, at least it is an honest attempt at good filmmaking and something that I would love to see more of in this industry.
